Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game was coming to San Diego. In an event that runs just once a year, was there a way to help MLB stand out from their regular line of activities they run at every ASG that included Fan Fest and the Home Run Derby?
Fact: Players give a decade. Fans give a lifetime. Yet, there was no current forum to honor the fan. Courageous went to town to create the first ever “Hall Of Fan”. A nationwide competition called “Enshrine Mine” allowed fans to nominate loved ones or themselves through social channels for this new type of induction. A conglomerate of current and past All Stars including Dave Winfield and Trevor Hoffman would come together to vote in the first ever member of “The Hall of Fan”.
Mike Smith, aka “Friar Bert”, a member of the US Air Force, had his fan jersey hoisted over the baseball diamond during All Star Week; a ceremony befitting of the most passionate fan. From Huffington Post to Yahoo Sports, the story was picked up across the country. American Forces Network carried the inaugural event live on Facebook and aired it during the ASG game on military bases overseas. Now, we’ve given fans another reason to cheer because every year a fan gets to watch his or her jersey put on display the same way baseball legends have been celebrated for decades.
